Background of the Study

Clinical rotations are an essential component of nursing education, providing students with hands-on experience in real-world healthcare settings. At Bayelsa State College of Nursing and Midwifery, clinical rotations are designed to help students develop clinical skills, apply theoretical knowledge, and prepare for professional nursing practice. These rotations expose students to various healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, and community health centers, where they interact with patients, healthcare professionals, and multidisciplinary teams.

While clinical rotations are critical for skill development, they also present various challenges that can affect students’ learning experiences. Some of the common challenges faced by nursing students during clinical rotations include inadequate clinical supervision, limited access to learning resources, and exposure to stressful clinical environments (Sulaimon et al., 2023). Additionally, students often face difficulties in managing their time between academic coursework and clinical practice, which can affect their performance and well-being. Despite these challenges, the role of clinical rotations in preparing students for the nursing profession remains vital.

This study seeks to evaluate the challenges faced by nursing students during clinical rotations at Bayelsa State College of Nursing and Midwifery and their impact on student learning and development.

Statement of the Problem

Clinical rotations are crucial for nursing education, yet nursing students at Bayelsa State College of Nursing and Midwifery face significant challenges that may hinder their learning experience and professional development. These challenges, including inadequate supervision, insufficient training opportunities, and high levels of stress, may affect students' ability to fully benefit from their clinical training. This study aims to explore the specific challenges faced by nursing students during clinical rotations and to assess how these challenges impact their clinical competence, academic performance, and overall readiness for professional nursing practice.

Objectives of the Study

1. To identify the challenges faced by nursing students during clinical rotations at Bayelsa State College of Nursing and Midwifery.

2. To assess the impact of these challenges on students' clinical skills development and academic performance.

3. To recommend strategies for addressing the challenges faced by nursing students during clinical rotations.

Research Questions

1. What challenges do nursing students face during clinical rotations at Bayelsa State College of Nursing and Midwifery?

2. How do these challenges impact nursing students' clinical skills development and academic performance?

3. What strategies can be implemented to address the challenges faced by nursing students during clinical rotations?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nursing students at Bayelsa State College of Nursing and Midwifery face significant challenges during clinical rotations.

2. The challenges faced by nursing students during clinical rotations negatively impact their clinical skills development and academic performance.

3. Strategies to address the challenges faced by nursing students during clinical rotations will improve their clinical skills development and academic performance.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nursing students at Bayelsa State College of Nursing and Midwifery, exploring the challenges they face during clinical rotations. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data and the difficulty in generalizing the findings to other nursing programs with different clinical settings.
